VAR DECISION: No penalty.

VAR review: Sanchez clearly catches Haaland, which makes that level of contact enough to help the striker go to ground as he does.

Most would have expected VAR, Lee Mason, to award a penalty, but he chose not to as the ball went out of play and he felt there was minimal contact.

The argument that the ball was going out doesn't seem to hold water, as the foul remains a foul -- although it can certainly be used when deciding on a yellow card or a red card to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. . Minimal contact should only be considered when the challenge is shoulder to shoulder or a regular tackle. When a player catches an opponent with the sole (studs) of the boot leading, a penalty kick should result.

VAR overturned: Dunk foul penalty on Silva

What happened: Bernardo Silva ran through the area in the 39th minute and collided with a Lewis dunk. Pawson ignored the appeal.

VAR decision: Penalty, Haaland scores.

VAR Review: Play continues while the VAR reviews the incident and comes to a decision in accordance with protocol (2 minutes, 15 seconds from foul to award of penalty). If the ball went out of play at any point during this period, Pawson would not allow play to resume. This happens in most games, so a match can go on during a review and not be interrupted if VAR clears the incident.

One of the important aspects of VAR is whether a player initiates contact to draw a foul, which makes this VAR confusing.

Mason thought it was a foul from the dunk rather than initial contact from Silva (the review did not consider a bump.) Whether you believe the Manchester City forward positioned his feet or he was caught by the dunk is subjective. The reason why VAR is involved seems wrong.

If Pawson had awarded the penalty himself, there is considerable doubt that VAR would not have been overturned. It should have been with the on-pitch results. For VAR to overrule the referee on such a subjective call does not seem to fit the overriding protocol for Premier League reviews. The referee's monitor will have the final decision, but VAR usually shows evidence to support overturning rather than looking the other way from different angles.

Bucayo Soccer's booking for simulation against Southampton is similar, although it was a tough decision by referee Robert Jones to show the yellow card. Duje Caleta-Carr tried to tackle Saka outside the area, so VAR cannot review, but the Arsenal forward put his foot between the defenders to initiate contact.

In both cases the best decision would be to take no action and continue playing.
