Justin Bieber says a rare condition that paralyzes half the superstar performer's face is causing him to postpone his trip. The multiple Grammy winner suffers from Ramsay Hunt syndrome, he said in a video posted on Instagram on Friday. This syndrome causes facial paralysis and affects the facial nerves through an infection called fox herpes. HT spoke to Dr Praveen Gupta, Executive Director and Head of Department of Neurology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute about Justin's condition, symptoms and more.

Talking about the causes of this condition, Dr Gupta said, “Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a viral infection, chickenpox-zoster virus, of the facial nerves. It is a family of herpes viruses. Painful eruptions around the ears. Another name is herpes zoster oticus.”

Regarding the symptoms, he said: “What it does is that the facial muscles relax. It can cause pain in your ears and around your face, it can make it hard to close your eyes, your face will look congested and when you smile you will have trouble expelling air from your mouth, the taste receptors in your mouth too is thus found in the case”.
