Dengue cases in the district have crossed the 600 mark. Health officials have started awareness campaigns across the district to make people aware about the prevention of the disease.

A total of 3,30,801 houses were visited in the district and dengue larvae were found in about 10,000 houses, officials said.

The Health Department also organized a rally in major markets of the city on Monday. The rally from Phase 3B1 Dispensary to Phase 7 Market was led by Dr. Adarsh Pal Kaur, Civil Surgeon and Dr. Shalindar Kaur, District Epidemiologist. During the rally, health workers were carrying placards and banners raising slogans for prevention of dengue. After the rally, 942 houses were surveyed and dengue larvae were found in 29 houses.

Dr Kaur said that the objective of the rally was to educate the shopkeepers and other people visiting the markets about dengue and other vector borne diseases so that they can take timely remedial measures and thus save their lives. He appealed to the people to observe every Friday as a dry day and appealed for their cooperation to make the district dengue free. He said that it is the duty of the health department to make people aware about the symptoms, testing, prevention and treatment of the disease as awareness can help in preventing and fighting this disease more easily.

The civil surgeon said the department has been carrying out information, education and communication activities in the district for the past several weeks and is asking people to protect themselves from dengue. Dengue is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes mosquito, which usually targets during the day, he added. He said Aedes mosquitoes breed in desert coolers, water storage containers, tyres, overhead tanks and other places where water accumulates. He appealed to the people to keep all water storage containers covered, apart from removing old tyres, broken utensils and crockery.
