Lucknow: There has been a sudden spurt in dengue cases in Uttar Pradesh and experts say that this number may increase in the coming days due to the increase in the number of breeding places of m

osquitoes. The state reported 2,103 dengue cases and one death between January and September this year, compared to 11,097 cases and three deaths during the same period in 2021.

On Friday, 34 new dengue cases were reported in Lucknow, including 21 men. District Health Education Officer Yogesh Raghuvanshi said cases have been reported from Aliganj, NK Road, Indira Nagar, Kakori, Malihabad, Chinhat and Rajajipuram.

42 new dengue cases were reported in Lucknow on Thursday and eight on the previous day. So far, over 300 cases have been reported in the state capital.

Dr Abhishek Shukla, general secretary of the Association of International Doctors, said, "Recessive rains have compensated for the lack of rainfall in September, but have resulted in waterlogging at many places, which is conducive to breeding of mosquitoes."

At present at least a dozen dengue patients are admitted in various hospitals of the city. The District Malaria Officer of Lucknow has asked private laboratories testing dengue to conduct confirmatory tests from the state laboratory as well.

why the sudden jump

Experts say that many areas have been submerged due to heavy rains. “If the water remains stagnant for a few days and the day temperature rises, mosquitoes will breed. This may further add to the dengue figures,” said Professor Kausar Usman, senior faculty, King George Medical University (KGMU).

What to do

Doctors said that the best way to cut off the breeding source of mosquitoes is to remove the water accumulated in and around homes and other establishments. Dr. Rama Srivastava, former president of IMA, Lucknow said, "Sprinkle lime on the stagnant water until you can remove it."

In Prayagraj

In Prayagraj, dengue is spreading its feet even after lakhs of efforts of the district medical and health officials. With 12 new cases on Friday, the total number of people affected has risen to 263 this year, official records show.

Out of all the patients, 229 have already been cured while the remaining 34 are undergoing treatment. However, the count is still much lower than the 1,299 cases that were reported in the district in 2021 or 1,121 cases in 2019, officials said.

District Malaria Officer, Prayagraj, AK Singh said that new cases were reported from other places like Naini, Daraganj, Teliarganj, Rajapur, Civil Lines, Phaphamau and Civil Lines on Friday.

The DMO said that a total of 210 beds including 25 each at Motilal Nehru (Colvin) Mandal Hospital, Dufferin Hospital and SRN Hospital, 35 beds at Tej Bahadur Sapru (Bailey) Hospital besides 20 CHCs have five beds each. The fever helpdesk reserved for dengue patients is also active in the district's community health centers and urban primary health centres.
